Letter to birth mother

Hi! We are Mike and Amy and we would first like to thank you for taking the time to get to know us. We are extremely grateful to be considered as potential parents should you choose to pursue adoption. We understand what a difficult decision this is for you and we wish you much peace and kindness during this challenging time. In order to know us better, we would like to give you a small glimpse into our future life with a child.

Imagine a three-bedroom home with a large yard in a kid friendly neighborhood with parks, walking trails, and playgrounds. Outdoor activities are a big part of our lives and we envision taking daily walks, bike rides and going on play dates at the park. The nearby sports field offers little league and soccer and we would love to join in the fun. In the summer months, we plan on taking frequent trips to our neighborhood pool.

Also imagine a fun loving and creative home filled with music, books, food and family. Mike enjoys playing the guitar and would love to share his passion for music. We are both avid readers and we hope to instill a love for books and literature. We have fond memories of reading children’s books before bed and we hope to pass on this tradition. We both enjoy cooking and entertaining so we envision many barbeques and family gatherings filled with games, movies, and laughter.

Lastly, imagine a close-knit family who is beyond excited for the addition of a little one. The grandparents are planning on babysitting regularly and spoiling the child with love and affection. Aunts, uncles, and cousins are eager to share our family traditions such as camping trips, visits to the pumpkin patch and apple farm, and making tamales on Christmas Eve. Experiencing different people, places and cultures is important to our family so we envision many vacations all over the world along with day trips to museums, Broadway shows, and sporting events.

This is just a glimpse into the life of our family. We hope you can see how truly excited we are to be parents. Our hearts are filled with love and laughter to give your child. We are dedicated to providing a safe, loving, supportive environment surrounded by unconditional love and acceptance. We will provide every opportunity within our reach to allow your child to succeed. We believe in the importance of education and lifelong learning and this will be a priority in our household. Fortunately for us, our neighborhood has some of the best schools in all of California.

Fortunately for us, our neighborhood has some of the best schools in all of California. At an early age, your child will be exposed to many different experiences including sports, music and art classes, traveling, summer camps, and community activities. As they get older, we will encourage the freedom to pursue their interests and hobbies and to be their own person.

We believe that adoption is a precious gift of love, courage, and selflessness. Your child will know their birth story from the beginning. We will express to them how much you love them and that you wanted to give them the very best that life has to offer. We would very much like the opportunity to stay in contact with you. It is important to us that you know your child is loved and well cared for and to give you comfort in knowing that you made the right decision. With pictures and letters, we hope to share their joys and milestones through the years.

Thank you for taking the time to learn about us. We admire your courage and strength in considering adoption for your child and we wish you much peace and love in the days ahead.

Warmest regards,

Mike & Amy

Our cultural heritage

As a couple, we understand that the cultural background of an individual is an important piece of who they are. Mike was raised in a Mexican-American family with a mother who was born in Mexico and an American father of German/Scottish decent. The diversity in his home taught him to embrace culture and to be proud of his heritage while being understanding of others. Mike is fluent in Spanish and loved spending time with his grandmother, conversing in Spanish and learning about her life.

Amy was raised in a traditional American family. Her mother is of English/French decent and her father of German/English/Irish decent. Living in California, Amy grew up in a culturally diverse area and learned to value and respect the diversity of her friends and community.

Through our travels and the people in our lives, we have experienced many different customs and beliefs. Together, we attended a Spanish immersion program in Antigua, Guatemala while living with a family in their small home. This was an amazing experience for both of us because we were able to live the culture while studying the language. We have each independently attended immersion programs, Mike in Mexico and Amy in Costa Rica, furthering our Spanish studies.

We feel very fortunate to have had the opportunity to experience other cultures. These experiences have helped shape our lives and we look forward to many journeys together as a family.

What we do in out leisure time

We are an active couple who enjoys the outdoors. Some of our favorite activities include running, hiking, gardening, fishing, camping, and trips to the farmer’s market and San Francisco. Exercise is important to both of us so you will often find us on the many walking/biking trails in our neighborhood. Sometimes we walk downtown for breakfast at one of our favorite local restaurants. Frequently, we take day trips to San Francisco to attend a Giants game, art exhibit, Broadway show, concert or outdoor festival. Traveling and experiencing different cultures is very important to us. In addition to visiting many places in the US, we have traveled to Europe, Central and South America.

As much as we appreciate the outdoors, we also enjoy spending quality time at home. Gardening is one of our favorite activities. Every spring, Mike plants tomatoes and other vegetables for our meals. On Sundays, we enjoy cooking a new recipe or one of our old favorites that we have collected over the years. During the warmer months, Mike barbeques his famous chicken or salmon. Amy loves to bake so the holidays are her favorite time of year. If we just want to kick back, Amy likes to get comfy on the couch with her Kindle while Mike practices the guitar. We are excited to be able to share the things we love to do with your child. What will their favorite activities be? We can’t wait to find out.

Our Favorite Vacation Spot

We have many favorite vacation spots but the one that shines above all is Kauai. Amy first visited Kauai with her family when she was in high school. Because it’s such a special and unique place, her family has made it the “go-to” vacation spot for rest and relaxation. During our second year of dating, Mike experienced the “awesomeness” of Kauai for the first time. We loved it so much as a couple that we returned on our honeymoon and have been back several times since.

Kauai is the ultimate location for relaxation, fun in the sun, and family time. We love reading on the beach, snorkeling, swimming, and watching the sea turtles and monk seals. We enjoy taking day hikes along the Napali Coast and Waimea Canyon. We visit the local farmer’s market to stock up on Hawaiian avocados, mangos, papayas, and pineapples. The shaved ice is one of our favorite local treats! There is very little TV watching; our days are filled with beach activities, games, and good ol’ family fun. We can’t wait to experience this special place with a little one and add to our lifelong “island” memories.

Qualites we love, admire, and respect in each other

Amy about Mike: Mike is truly a remarkable person and I feel very fortunate to have him in my life as my husband and my best friend. He is a loving, compassionate, and charismatic person who loves to make people laugh. With his quick wit, Mike is the jokester of the family. He has an innate ability to make the people around him feel special. Mike is constantly doing little thoughtful things such as bringing me coffee in bed or packing notes in my lunch bag to remind me how much he loves me. He is unbelievably patient and will make an amazing father. It melts my heart when I see how loving he is with our niece and nephews. It’s simply a natural role for him and one of the many reasons why I can’t wait to start our family.

Mike about Amy: Amy is a very loving, thoughtful, and beautiful person. She instantly knows when I’m having a bad day and quickly offers a reassuring hug and smile. She loves to entertain and comes up with creative ideas for birthdays and holidays. Our friends and family rave about her recipes and party favors. Amy will make a wonderful mother. She lights up when she shares the funny things our little nephew does or the cool clothes she finds for our niece. The kids love their “Auntie” and look forward to seeing her whenever they can. I feel very fortunate to begin a family with the love of my life and my very best friend.
